Review of DodgeBall: A True Underdog Story (2004) by Alex M — 09 Sep 2014
I know when I walked out of the theater after seeing this movie, we had an instant classic on our hands. Ben Stiller actually makes this movie as White Goodman, his over the top antics as a vain and super idiotic gym rat. It plays all the right jokes that we all despise about "his" type but not without being too mean-spirited or crass about it. It's just the right amount. The premise is super simple but perfect all the same, so we can focus on the individual gags and character moments.
This is a story and script that might have been unfunny without the right people, and that's to the credit to the cast they got- straight-man Vince Vaugn, Justin Long, Stephen Root, Alan Tudyk and Christine Taylor all round out the cast with very exaggerated but lovable characters. Hank Azaria and Rip Torn as Patches was a great surprise too. The perfect coach for their underdog team! And that Lance Armstrong cameo at the end. How relevant. Definitely a favorite comedy of the 2000s.
