Review of Doctor Zhivago (1965) by Wendy B — 14 Apr 2009
This is just beyond any word that the very limited english dictionary can provide. This is just pure magic. Someone once said, "Good films say something, great films leave nothing to be said." This might just be a love story, but it is so amazingly deep. There is a passion at the very heart of the film - you can feel the characters, not just understand them, but feel them. There is some hidden prose behind the visuals here, a hidden prose that takes us back to the original masterpiece from which it is adapted. This is life, this is Russia, this is Omar Sharif, this is Julie Christie. This is emotion, conflict, hopelessness, and then hope. This is one of the greatest things i've ever seen.
Perhaps it is anti-communist(not in the ideology though. Only in its implementation). Perhaps it is self-indulgent. Perhaps it is three hours long. I don't care. You won't spend a better three hours too quickly.
Well, ofcourse, the use of flashbacks would seem old-fashioned to one watching the film in this day and age, where the very trend is to challenge norms. But that adds to the classic feel.
Watch it, for the love of anything, just watch it.
