Review of Doctor Who: The Day of the Doctor (2013) by Dany O — 25 Jan 2014
This episode is the 50'th anniversary episode, which stars Matt Smith, David Tennant, John Hurt, Jenna Coleman, Billie Piper, Jenna Redgrave, Joanna Page and Ingrid Oliver.
The plot of the episode revolves around the mysterious 'War Doctor's and the 'Last Great Time War'. It also features Billie Piper as the mysterious weapon the Moment.
The Current Doctor, Matt Smith performs at his best alongside his predecessor David Tennant and of course, companion Jenna Coleman, who plays Clara Oswald. Joanna Page also stars in the special as Queen Elizabeth the First, probably the most dramatic character she has ever portrayed.
This episode includes a lot of references to the past series, including photos, Ingrid Oliver's character wearing The inconic fourth Doctors scarf. Jemma Redgrave returns as Kate Stewart, following the return of U.N.I.T.
The plot is very dark, based on the day the Doctor ended the time war, mixed in with the Zygons / Queen Elizabeth story. The conclusion of this episode is in fact the Doctor does not destroy Gallifrey, he saves it, by freezing the event in a painting.
This special also features cameos from every past Doctor, including the Twelfth Doctor, Peter Capaldi. Tom Baker makes an appearance as the Fourth Doctor (Well, the Curator).
The episode concludes with an emotional shot of all Twelve Doctors (discluding Capaldi) and the possibility of the return of Gallifrey.
Overall, I give this episode 4 stars out of 5. My reasons being that the Time War plot was ruined by the Zygon plot line and the time Length was 75 minutes, while an extra 10 minutes could not have gone to waste.
