Review of Doctor Who: The Day of the Doctor (2013) by Mark O — 24 Nov 2013
Fifty years ago a man in a blue box travelled across the stars, across time and into our hearts. To commemorate this long running sci fi epic the BBC commissioned an anniversary TV and cinematic feast.
Oh boy, it is certainly worth a watch. The audience were treat to not one, nor two but three versions of The Doctor played by Matt Smith, David Tennant and the legendary John Hurt. These three are thrust to stop the decimation of Gallifrey during 'The Last Great Time War.
' The Doctor must fight the usual suspects in the Daleks and there is a welcome return for the shape shifting aliens, The Zygons. However, The Doctor now discovers that the greatest threat may not be the enemies he faces but it may well be himself.
The episode blends heart, soul, emotion, humour with a very well crafted and clever story. Praise must go to the writers who have produced a sensational example of a script that is both beautifully written and is executed superbly by the great cast.
Matt Smith and David Tennant bring the Doctor to life with amazing performances in which they play off one another excellently with great panache and humour to boot. However, the show was all about John Hurt who as The War Doctor stole the show.
It is a shame that he never had a chance to become a full regeneration of the Doctor because without a doubt he could of been up there as one of the greats. Finally, to top it off the film crafted amazing visual effects that demonstrates why Doctor Who is the BBC's winning franchise.
The Time War is dealt with in both a respectful and entertaining way that grips the audience to their seats. This was the perfect present for all 'Whovians' and it did the legacy of the show proud.
This was an event I was anticipating for months and it did not leave me disappointed, it left me blown away. To be part of the whole experience was something I will never forget. This is a rip-roaring roller coaster ride from start to end.
Long live Doctor Who, roll on the 2013 christmas special and bring on Doctor number twelve...Peter Capaldi.
