Review of Doctor Who (1996) by Cleveland C — 19 Jul 2007
This movie acts as a nice transition between the look and feel of the classic series and the current BBC series. However, as (an attempted) reboot, it tries to cover too much to an unfamiliar American audience.
The film attempted to introduce the same amount of back story in the first two minutes as was introduced in the entire first three seasons of the current BBC series. Unfortunately, an Americanized Doctor Who loses one of the chief characteristics that makes Doctor Who great: its Britishness.
Without that, it just becomes generic genre fare. Add to that a one-dimensional, overacted nemesis and a main character who seems utterly bewildered for much of the movie...well, you get the idea. The 1996 Fox Doctor Who movie was a valiant attempt to bring the show to America, but it should have been executed differently and handled by someone with more skill and/or experience.
