Review of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022) by Moviemaker201 — 09 May 2022
Gave me everything I wanted from a Sam Raimi-directed MCU movie and more. It fits in the MCU, but the directing and camerawork build the distinct comic book-y, classic horror-inspired, darkly humorous tone that could only come from Raimi.
Like his original superhero Darkman (1990) and the Spider-Man trilogy, this film actually feels like a nutty, fast-paced comic book adventure. Got me reading the original Doctor Strange stories from Steve Ditko/Stan Lee in the '60s! It's clear that Raimi and screenwriter Michael Waldron (Rick & Morty, Loki) are passionate about the character and had fun with the possibilities of the multiverse.
There were just enough easter eggs and references to other Marvel properties to whet franchise fans' appetites. Make no mistake, however; they were used at just the right times and with appropriate brevity.
Multiverse of Madness still felt like a Doctor Strange solo outing, all crossover madness aside. All in all, I will definitely catch this again in IMAX before the week is done.
