Review of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022) by Mrdifferent — 07 May 2022
Overall, it's a mess with very little redeeming characteristics.
It's theme and style is disjoined as it's still a marvel movie but there are horror-movie scenes. But it jumps between those styles. At one point, a zombie winks, at another point there is a jump scare and a character surprises behind another one and snaps the other character's neck. So it doesn't feel like a fun marvelovie because there are scary scenes and gore, but it's not a complete horror movie as it still trust to feel fun.
The fighting is mostly magical based so it doesn't carry as much weight. Just a lot of special effects but you don't feel the tension in their moves or actions.
The plot has some of those "wait... Why didn't you just do this or that" or "wait... You could have done that earlier and avoided all of this".
It leans heavier in the spells and magic and stuff than in previous iterations. I let it slide in the past because they're superhero movies and shows anyway. But in this one, there's more talk of demons, spells, spirits.
It's more heavy handed on the wokeness than I would prefer The only redeeming part of the movie was that the special effects were well done, and the few scenes with some characters from other marvel comics that we have not seen before for alterations of them because multiverse. That part was cool. Thankfully, I think this movie does not drive the overall MCU story so it should be skipable.
