Review of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022) by Jluis_001 — 06 May 2022
I won't be among those who seem to be forgiving most of the flaws of this film because it was directed by Sam Raimi, and while there are points where his influence is noticeable, this film is 100% Marvel.
As far as I can remember this is perhaps the first sequel that basically drops you into the story expecting you to be fully aware of everything that has happened in the MCU, mostly because it's the first of the films of Phase 4 that makes a connection with the Disney+ shows.
While this is something that is commonly understood by anyone watching a film in this franchise, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is one that has nothing, absolutely nothing to stand on its own.
Now the entertainment is still there, now more watered down but still effective to the degree to which it works, but I think Marvel's idea for this story was more of a tie-in for what's next and to give some fan service to their hardcore fanboys who now look desperate to see cameos from other franchises and of course ''new characters''. You'll know what I mean when you see it.
My biggest problem lies in trying to understand why they decided to make Wanda Maximoff the villain. I don't know if Marvel had nothing left for her after Wandavision and by the looks of it even with that bad ending, we won't be seeing her again for a while, if ever. A shame.
She was never given a chance to explode properly, even when she gets the spotlight here, she ends up relegated.
Good things and bad things, as with all MCU movies. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is not a major contribution to the saga, but gets the job done to keep the audience interested and excited, however briefly.
That being said, between this film's post-credits scene with Charlize Theron making her MCU introduction, talking about incursions, which are a big deal, and those of all the other films in this phase with the exception of Black Widow, I have no idea what Marvel Studios is up to.
Secret Wars? I don't think so. Too big, too complicated.
I guess we will find out sooner rather than later.
