Review of Doctor Strange (2016) by Jo B — 03 May 2018
The beginning parts of the film were easily my favorite because they didn't waste time with filler or nonsense, they delved STRAIGHT into character development and illustrating his difficulties in great detail. Lots of nice connections to later portions as well like him refusing patients to protect his record and then doctors later doing the same to him in a sort of karmic retribution.
The visuals were great as well because since CGI is so prevalent in the film as a whole it never felt out of place (except during those astral projection scenes which were a bit silly looking). Overall the CGI was far more beneficial than detractive.
And I suppose as a last point the villain (villains?) are meh and almost don't need to exist at all but I'll forgive that for what was otherwise a great ailment/recovery focused film. Strange's hands and struggle with them is easily the most interesting part of this film, and I especially appreciated how at the end of the film they show the hands shake one last time--nicely wrapping up his character arc and clearly illustrating his decision.
