Review of Doctor Strange (2016) by Christopher L — 10 Mar 2017
There were a lot of ways this was better than I thought it would be. The villain was actually interesting, doing something that actually made sense and was in opposition to the lead mentor character. There were other characters that had philosophical differences with the main character and the lead mentor.
It was visually very impressive. And I thought Cumberbatch did a fine job. But the character of Dr Strange got garbled up in the Marvel formula. Is he brooding, or is he funny, is he arrogant always or does he grow as a character.
It's never clear. He wisecracks because that's what a character is supposed to do on regular intervals in a Marvel film. He's angry because it's time for the character to be alone. He's never doing things because his character demands it, he's always doing things because the story demands it.
A pity, too, because there were a lot of really great moving parts in this film, but in the end it becomes the same paint-by-numbers Marvel formula.
