Review of Doctor Strange (2016) by Kyle S — 17 May 2017
Doctor Strange entered into a new dimension of Marvel with art, intellect, and genuine entertainment. Marvel infamously follows a formula plot that allows the studio to pump out continuous blockbusters that only gives viewers the same movie with building destruction, corny catchphrases, and seeing their favorite comic book characters come to life. However, with this film, Marvel gave us a character that is less known from the MCU and did something different and risky. This is same reason why Guardians of the Galaxy was so successful. Doctor Strange's source material was a difficult feat to put on the big screen, but director Scott Derrickson delivered complete excellence.
What made Doctor Strange such a captivating film was the unexpected elements from Marvel Studios. The visuals of them film were extremely artistic and psychedelic, and completely worked for the film to add true multiple dimensions and prospectives necessary for the creation of Doctor Strange's world. Additionally, the philosophical dialogues added an intellectual and thought-provoking aspect to the film. The audience actually cares what is being said in the film, because it not only affects the characters, but makes the audience question their own ideas. This is all the result of terrific writing.
Doctor Strange's character could not have been possible without Benedict Cumberbatch's brilliant performance. He has great talent for being arrogant and intelligent that draws the focus of everyone in the audience. Cumberbatch is the perfect actor for the part.
Doctor Strange is arguable one of Marvel's best movies, and is my personal favorite marvel film. A solid 5 stars.
