Review of Doctor Strange (2016) by Roshan P — 29 Jul 2017

So I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. I had originally never cared about seeing this movie, but I decided to see it with some friends for the hell of it. I suppose one of the main reasons I thought this movie was good was because I had virtually no expectations for it.

So overall, this movie is a pretty fun, entertaining, action and adventure film. The visual effects are brilliant and the acting is top notch. The script is probably the weakest part of this movie, but that's not to say the script was bad.

This movie does many things right, but also many things wrong:

As I mentioned, the acting is phenomenal all around and the cast is superb in their roles. The production set was also great and the directing was everything the movie needed it to be.

The overall plot unfortunately resembled a bit too much of the archetypal "hero" story: "arrogant prick who has it all suddenly loses all of it and must go on a journey to discover himself. Along the way he meets some "teacher" who teaches him some crazy shit and then there's a final boss battle in which the prick becomes the leader of the league of good guys".

In the beginning, a major weakness of the script is the guy that Strange consults to learn how he fixed his back. The dude just hands the "magical" secrets to Strange for virtually no reason! Not only that, but WHY would the dude reveal the secret considering he SHOULD be showing resentment towards Strange since Strange refused to see him. I felt that point in the script was added to propel to the plot forward, not because it actually made any sense.
