Review of Doctor Strange (2016) by Jimmy B — 28 Oct 2017
Even after Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant-Man, Doctor Strange proved that no one should question the properties Marvel Studios chooses to adapt to film. Though seeing origin stories in the Marvel Cinematic Universe should be getting old, I believe this is the most thoroughly entertaining one we've seen in years, and easily the most different one.
As is almost always true with MCU films, the cast as a whole is great. To date, Marvel seems to pick the right actors for the parts to such a successful extent that you can't picture anybody else in the roles (Robert Downey Jr.
, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth...). The same can be easily said here for Benedict Cumberbatch, who if you still didn't think was an A-list actor, he definitely is now. Also, and I know a zillion of other reviews have pointed this out, but the special effects are astounding.
This film is just fun visually, as it's really an "out-there" and almost beautiful-looking movie. When this was still in theaters, I can't remember any other time I explicitly recommended people to see something in 3D and, if possible, IMAX.
It was such a unique experience that unfortunately loses something on smaller 2D screens. Now, is it a perfect movie? No. As with many of the other MCU movies, the villain isn't fleshed out the best and given enough to do (which is a shame, because here they had the great Mads Mikkelsen).
I think that's a gripe that can be easily overlooked, though, as Doctor Strange is a supremely entertaining (and different) movie.
