Review of Doctor Strange (2016) by Sean W — 16 Apr 2018
Solid MCU film that, while sticks to the basic origin story, stands out thanks to an excellent cast & superb visuals. Cumberbatch is perfect in the title role, bringing the intelligence & arrogance he uses so well in "Sherlock" to great use as Strange.
He gets great support from the rest of the cast, though some are underserved, particularly Rachel McAdams as the love interest & Mads Milkinson as the villain, Kacilius (not one of the MCU's better villains).
Behind the camera, Scott Derrickson crafts some brilliant visuals & action scenes ("Inception" has nothing on this movie) though the story is standard & predictable. Thankfully, there are some fun twists, especially Strange's cape (best supporting character in the MCU to date) and the final battle is done is the kind of twisted, magical way perfect for Dr.
Strange. Plus, the look of the film is fantastic, with some scenes looking like a Steve Dikto (the co-creator with Stan Lee) panel come to life. Overall, a solid Marvel film and is sometimes great, especially when Derrickson puts his visuals to work.
