Review of Doctor Strange (2016) by Muhammad L — 17 Apr 2017
The film is 'Strange', in a good way!
I wasn't a huge fan of Cumberbatch before, but this film definitely put me on the path to becoming one.
A renowned neurosurgeon who loses the use of his skilled hands (in a car crash), seeks rehabilitation in the most bizarre fashion of all - magic and sorcery.
Doctor Strange travels to Kamar-Taj to study under a sorcerer. Strange develops powers of the mind and body - through mind bending and 'laws of physics' breaking techniques, as well various fighting styles. This journey of discovery, learning, and self improvement reminds me of Batman Begins which I loved. It's intriguing and exciting!
After this the film does not slow down and get lost in the granular details of sorcery, but it also does not go to fast that you feel disconnected from the plot. There is always just the right amount of detail and pace to put the pieces together.
The action and comedy is great with Cumberbatch giving a solid performance; and even though the film relies heavily on CG and visual effects, it's still an entertaining superhero origin story. It's not all about the action, the film makes you think..
