Review of Doctor Strange (2016) by Brian D — 06 Jun 2017
Before I start this review I just want to point out that out of all the accents Cumberbatch has tried to do in his career like in Black Mass (2015), and August: Osage County (2013) this was by far his most successful, just saying, ok now that we got that out of the way lets do Doctor Strange:
Doctor Strange is about a very narcissistic but brilliant billionaire neurosurgeon Stephen Strange who gets into a car crash and can't use his hands so when western medicine fails him he gives eastern medicine a try in hopes of finding these people that can most likely cure him but little does he know he becomes a powerful sorcerer. Benedict Cumberbatch plays Stephen Strange and does a very well job with the part but honestly thats no surprise at this point the man is a phenomenal actor. Other than Cumberbatch this film has a shocking amount of oscar nominated actors like Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachael McAdams, and Tilda Swinton so seeing all these so called "sophisticated" actors in a marvel movie was pretty awesome if you ask me. Even though I am a fan of Cumberbatch and thought he did a good job in the film Doctor Strange is not going to go down as my favorite hero in fact to me the best character was The Ancient One played by Tilda Swinton she definitely stole the show in my opinion and it was great seeing her in a fun high budget action film as opposed to an oscar worthy drama. Chiwetel Ejiofor was another actor in this film that I was impressed along side Tilda Swinton, and I can't say much about Rachael McAdams because she didn't have enough screen time for me to critique. However as much as I enjoyed the performances and the characters in this film I have to be honest the films effects were utterly mind-blowing, the effects in this film carried the movie pretty much. Doctor Strange isn't a perfect film in fact I thought it took itself way too seriously at times and Marvel films don't usually do that so I was a little disappointed with that however to me thats just a mild flaw and it was obvious the director wanted to spice things up a bit. I also want to point out that though Doctor Strange is a very good film I thought Captain America: Civil War and Deadpool were much better superhero films but thats just me, unlike those films Doctor Strange was more visual artsy film that didn't necessarily rely on huge fight scenes, not saying theres no fighting sequences just saying its a more visual film, I give the effects team on this film huge props. Doctor Strange is a fun, smart, and intriguing film that will keep you entertained from start to finish and will also make you feel like you are on an acid trip. If your looking for an artsy action film than give Doctor Strange a try I guarantee you won't be disappointed.
