Review of Doctor Strange (2016) by Amanda C — 10 Nov 2017

Dr. Strange is the story of an egocentric neurosurgeon that shatters his hands in a car crash. Dr. Strange seeks out surgery after surgery in a desperate effort to heal his hands and return to his prior life.

After a series of ineffective surgeries, the doctor heads to Katmandu and winds up getting more than he bargains for. The movie made me feel hopeful for Dr. Strange. As much as he is an unlikable character, you can't help but empathize for his plight to heal himself.

I appreciated that throughout the course of the film, his ego seems to shift and he finally becomes more concerned for other people than he does about himself. The editing in this film was wonderful, particularly in the scene where Tilda Swinton's character takes Dr.

Strange on an existential journey to show him everything he could learn to achieve and accomplish under her guidance. The way that everything was cut together made for such an interesting montage. Dr.

Strange was thrust into different worlds, but then a scene would be playing in his eyes, it was very fascinating. In regard to the audio and sound design in the film, I actually especially enjoyed a scene in the beginning of the film, that didn't have sound.

It was the scene where Dr. Strange steps in to save the seemingly brain-dead man and goes to the family to let them know that the man is still alive and that he saved his life. That scene for me had a lot of impact.

There were some instances that I feel the sound effects were underplayed. Toward the end, when Dr. Strange is essentially trying to save the world, there were so many things going on and I feel that the sound didn't come through as much as I would have liked.

Buildings were collapsing and people were being flung from cars and in scenes like that, I like feeling like I'm there through the use of the sound effects and sound design and I didn't get that with this particular sequence.
