Review of Doctor Strange (2016) by Artem T — 25 Apr 2017
Funny and wit Marvel blockbuster.
I rate the film as 4/5 for it being entertaining, with perfectly dosed fractions of humour, though a bit simple in terms of plot.
Of course, the movie shines due to its brilliant cast. Arrogant Benedict Cumberbatch, pretty Rachel McAdams, mirrorish bald Tilda Swinton. Others did not impress me much.
Especially, I was dissapointed how Mads Mikkelsen's talents were not used. I mean he just walks through scenes with the same face and that's it. It's really sad not to utilize such charismatic and deep actor.
Before watching the movie I had a change to check animated 'Doctor Strange: The Sorcerer Supreme' (with the on-screen title of Doctor Strange). Later, I thought that it would spoil experience from the 2016 film. However, it is not, it even helps more to understand the character of acknowledged Doctor. If you did not watch the animation it is the right time to do it, as it is not so advertised, but you will enjoy for sure.
Of course, when you speak about movie with $165 million production budget, you cannot omit how good it looks on the screen. And, believe me, you will not be dissapointed. The movie visual effects look incredibly good.
Literally everything from flying cloak (a little tribute to Alladin's carpet) to fantastic moving buildings and whole streets will amaze you.
In those action moves it is easy to notice where Scott Derrickson took his inspiration (Nolan's Inception).
I also liked how the movie creators played with theme of time. It was rather fresh and intriguing approach.
The movie will not fail you, except for a few long minutes of boring dialogues on good and evil topics.
