Review of Doctor Strange (2016) by Brandon S — 26 Apr 2017
As a movie, it ain't bad, although confusing at times. Production quality is high and the action, acting, and music don't leave any undesirable aftertaste. Albeit, it's strange (pun intended) to see Cumberbatch in a role which deprives him of his more British heritage, but it's welcome all the same.
On the other hand, with a forced tie-in to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the development of powers non-inherent in the actual comics, some of the concept and plot, although brilliant, should have zero place in the MCU, let alone the Marvel Multiverse as a whole.
Furthermore, Stephen Strange's attitude at the end more resembles that of, infamously, The Doctor, rather than Doctor Strange. The end result? I wouldn't be surprised if some more true fans nickname this movie "Doctor Strange Who?".
It's also rather odd that the main villain is not only a minor one from the comics, but one that's usually under the influence of what happens to be one of the PROtagonists in the movie. An ill omen? Judging from the post-credits scene, we can only wait and see.
