Review of Doctor Detroit (1983) by Hindénbörg E — 30 Sep 2007
This is one of those shitty 80's comedies that was made in between the era of Caddyshack and Caddyshack II. Dan Aykroyd is a zany college professor who gets mixed up in the pimp business and has to protect a bunch of really annoying whores (one of which is Fran Drescher) that don't know when to shut the fuck up. I think he's protecting them from some enbittered elderly woman (I guess this the the one movie Anne Ramsay turned down) and the bald bully from "My Bodyguard." I don't know if that's what it was about for sure. I wasn't paying attention and I didn't really care that much either. Dan Aykroyd also wears some metal glove for some reason (I think this might have been an influence for the villain in Repo Man?).
This movie is entertaining because of a few major details. First, DEVO performs the theme song. It's not a really good song, but it's Pre-1988 DEVO, so I'm not really going to complain. Second, it has a few decent throw-away one-liners. I can't remember any of them now to show you as an example. They were that good. Third, the absolute campiness/shittiness of it is what eventually saves it. The scene at the pimp convention where Aykroyd, the whores, and all the other pimps begin dancing in a highly choreographed manner to James Browns' "Get Up Offa that Thing" is so retarded that it has to be seen to be belived. It's like watching a man eat his own head. I had to rewtind it and watch it 3 times in a row. Just to see if THIS ACTUALLY HAPPENED. It did. And I remained frozen in utter terror each time.
The movie even ends with one of those weird epilogues that was made famous by "Animal House." You know what I'm talking about. At the end they show the various characters from the film acting out in some wild par-tay before going into freeze frame with what happened to their lives AFTER the film ended? I guess the producers made the false assumption that anyone watching the movie would give a shit. The only one I remember I think involved Howard Hesseman and one of the generic whores together in a shit while it went into freeze frame and below the statement, "Howard Hesseman and GENERIC SKANK soon married. He became a Republican Senator.".
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! JESUS FUCKING CHRIST! THE HILARITY! THE GODDAMNED HILARITY! IRONY! I CAN'T BREATH BECAUSE I'M LAUGHING SO FUCKING HARD!
And with that, I end this review. Nothing more can be said.
