Review of DOA: Dead or Alive (2006) by Sums I — 27 Jan 2011
Another video-game property mined for its depth of character, intricate plot, realistic life portrayal... BWAHAHAHA! Okay, okay, this is simply video-game action portrayed by real-life people - and if you judge it on that basis it's not half-bad.
Nobody's going to get oscars here, but that's not the point. A video-game has unrealistic action, impossible moves, unbeatable odds, etc. It's exactly what DOA is about... even stylized in how things are presented to look like a game with the tournament rankings, vs. screens, different style fighters and the like. (I even liked the volleyball match they threw in there as as tribute to the spin-off video game.).
Yes, Eric Roberts was laughable, dialogue stunted, action way over-the-top, and the plot with as many holes as a prairie dog field. But the femme fatales were sexy and it was enjoyable on the level of camp. And even if impossible... some of the martial arts choreography was creative and fun.
Just know what you're getting and it's not too bad!
