Review of Do the Right Thing (1997) by Hayden V — 07 Nov 2010
I just don't love it. I feel like people give Lee more credit than he deserves because they are afraid to be honest...His overall cinematic style is lacking, his shot-by-shot is amateur, and his characters have no depth or fresh-originality.
This story is supposed to break-down stereotypes but instead it grotesquely paints all of the racial groups into their most obvious stereotypes... and through it's lack of individualism in the characters and the shallow nature of each component of the story, I feel like in the end I can't imagine that any sane person leaves the movie feeling profoundly moved or enlightened, which any movie that has such a strong rating should do.
