Review of Do the Right Thing (1997) by Jacob G — 01 Mar 2011
A lot of Do the Right Thing is little sketches based around a dominantly black community in Brooklyn. Tensions rise and it all hits the fan when the sun goes down. The movie succeeds at portraying a riot that feels achingly real--it is painful to watch.
Spike Lee shows that there aren't any winners when it comes to racial tensions, yet in the final scene he still gives hope. Danny Aiello is stunning as the owner of a pizza shop, Ossie Davis plays an excellent community drunk who somehow sounds like the most sane man on the block.
Really, nearly every performance feels like a stand-out performance. I can't list them all.
