Review of Do the Right Thing (1997) by Mike G — 04 May 2012
This is still Spike Lee's best movie. And since I said that it must be true. What? Don't believe me?!! You want to fight over it? Break Out!!!! Anyways, it's Lee's most visceral film. It just drags you in and makes you want to watch it to the end a lot better than most flicks, and it's funny as hell despite the tragic pathos created by the eventual sudden death of Radio Raheem (It's got to be safe to spoil that by now!).
Bill Nunn was just fantastic in this movie and the rest of the cast including Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee and Spike himself are spot on for the time and place. No movie has taken on racism so head on and survived.
This one is powerful and well thought out, as Samuel L. Jackson would say, "and that's the quintessential truth Ruth.".
