Review of Do the Right Thing (1997) by Hamzah K — 13 Mar 2013
Is this Spike Lee's Citizen Kane? It could well be. The most striking thing about Do the Right Thing is the way that, for most of the run time, it appears to represent just a regular day. There is a slowly increasing tension that is palpable if not altogether tangible.
When events escalate beyond that or normality it is even more poignant for being understated, incidental even. To me it feels like the melting pot that is (was) America reaching boiling point, as typified by this small community.
I cant believe it has taken me so long to watch this.
