Review of Do the Right Thing (1989) by Ryan A — 26 Jul 2012
What an annoyingly blind piece of contradictory and preachy bollocks. 'Do the Right Thing' is like having someone yell at you for two hours, or worse still, having to sit through a school play that bluntly highlights racism and other social prejudices through contrivance and staginess.
Lee channels this film like a campaign billboard, rather than a piece of film art. It feels as if he thinks he can liberalise and set us all free from our prejudices, and become accepting of each other's culture through one film. This is Lee at his most pompous. And yet, does anyone 'Do the Right Thing'? Hell, no. Oh, maybe that elderly black bloke did when he saved that kid's life.
