By posing a deceptively simple question, Thorpe unearths a depth of emotional experience - most of which he's not yet conscious of himself and almost none of which have easy, iron-clad answers. The lasting impact is of having spent time with many men who have every seeming reason to relax and settle into happiness, if they'd simply stop talking themselves out of deserving to do so.
