Review of Djinn (2013) by Kenny N — 08 Nov 2015
Tobe Hooper doesn't make many movies any more. But when he does it's always something...unique. Yes, he has directed the horror masterpieces "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" (one of my all time favorite films and one of the scariest films of all time) and "Poltergeist" (which introduced Zelda Rubinstein to the world and spawned the oft-imitated catchphrase "They're hereee.
.."), but he is also responsible for lesser known but still frightening forrays into fear "The Funhouse," "Lifeforce," and the "Eye" segment of the lost horror gem "Body Bags.
" Even his bad films ("The Mangler," "Crocodile") have some special thing that sets them apart from every other purveyor of nightmares. "Djinn" is in the latter category.
It is the United Arab Eremite's first attempt at a mainstream horror film for the good ol' USA, and it's about a type of folk monster well known there. There's the something different that Tobe Hooper always offers in his films.
Unfortunately, this movie is no different from any other B-movie out there. The on-location setting and the authentic actors would serve a better film about this monster. Overall, a huge disappointment.
