Review of Django Unchained (2012) by Natasha M — 28 Nov 2014
Let's get one thing straight - I don't like Tarantino. Nothing but personal taste here; I just don't get his obsession with violence and blood spatter so excessive that it goes gallons beyond what is humanly possible.
That said, this film was amazing. It does not deserve the label "blaxploitation," most often reserved for bad B movies. This one may capitalize on Black anger and use the antebellum South's horrific practices as a perfect setting for Django's "coming of age" as a free man, but it rises so far above the genre in just about every respect that the label just doesn't apply.
Aside from the off-putting shooting of a horse by main character Schultz in the very beginning of the film, this is one of the best I have seen in a very, very long time and the *only* Tarantino movie I have been able to sit through.
The bizarro is actually somewhat minimal, with the exception of an unexpectedly side-splitting and totally derailing raid discussion about the logistics of wearing a white hood. Just watch it!
