Review of Django Unchained (2012) by Justin A — 09 Jan 2015
*spoilers*.
Once again it's the Christoph Waltz show. A very good (and bloody) Quentin Tarantino blaxploitation spaghetti western. I enjoyed pretty much everything, but the third act felt bogged down and lifeless after Christoph Waltz and Leonardo DiCaprio were killed off. It's mostly because Jamie Foxx simply doesn't have the presence to be an action hero or cowboy. He has a good look, but he just doesn't have that stern, cold presence that I felt the character needed. If only the movie was made at the peek of blaxploitation cinema, Fred Williamson would have been perfect for the role. It was also nice to see Franco Nero in the film in a scene between the two Djangos. A nice little nod (which Tarantino loves to do and doesn't overdo).
Obviously recommended.
