Review of Django Unchained (2012) by Dusty L — 09 Apr 2015
It's a lot of fun. I didn't find a lot to be wrong with it. The acting and characters are top notch. Django and Schultz are badasses, Candie is an evil yet likeable prick, and Stephen is a perfectly executed house negro by Sam Jackson. The blood splatter got rather ridiculous at certain times, so that's one negative. One weird thing I noticed is that Schultz feels more like the main character at times. I didn't mind it because Waltz steals the show with his Oscar-winning performance.
The story is a little convoluted once they start trying to save Broomhilda. It felt like Tarantino couldn't find a good enough reason for them to not buy her from the get-go. Everything is great up until they eventually cave in and buy her, but if they're so rich, wasn't Broomhilda's freedom worth spending the money in the first place? There's not a single moment I would take out, but maybe a few details I'd add, despite already being a long film.
