Review of Django (1966) by John P — 31 Jan 2008
I had an interesting experience with this movie. I watched the first half in English, which I figured would be the intended language, seeing as how the Leone westerns were like it. Halfway through, after enduring 45 minutes of bad dialogue and tired storytelling, I realized that it was originally Italian, so I switched over to that language track.
What a difference it made. Suddenly, the cliched story didn't seem so bad, and Franco Nero turned from a Clint Eastwood ripoff to an actual badass. If you ever want to see it, see it in Italian with the subtitles on.
It's no masterpiece (In my opinion, if you want to watch Spaghetti Westerns, look no further than Leone), but it's a good action movie in its own right. The camerawork was well done and the violence was delivered raw, which isn't so surprising, considering the 2nd unit director was Ruggero Deodato (who would later make violence as subtle as a C-section abortion in Cannibal Holocaust).
