Review of Django (1966) by Piers B — 03 Aug 2008
Even more than the Leone/Eastwood trilogy, this murky and sleazy masterpiece defined the Spaghetti Western. No more the altruism of the John Wayne or the Gary Cooper version of the Old West, just petty lives motivated by greed, jealousy and vengeance all caught in a miasma of mud and bullets.
It's not hard to see why this was banned in many countries for 20 or more years, but as a piece of cinematic art it is worth a truck full of more "trendy" directors' work. Even Peckinpah never topped this!
