Review of Divertimento (2000) by David F — 07 Mar 2012
This is a pretty intense look at the artistic process through the painting of a single portrait. Much of it takes place in the artist's studio where the camera gazes mesmerizingly at the artist's pencils and brushes and canvas but also at the nude model, played here by Emmanuelle Béart.
The film clocks in at close to four hours but I found that it did not drag or feel claustrophobic since it was able to mine the relationship between the artist and his model for enough drama to keep things interesting while the work of art made its progress from the sketch book to a large canvas.
