Review of Divergent (2014) by Nathan C — 01 Dec 2014
Entertaining YA adaptation that manages to feel the same as every other that came before it. Slick visuals, talented cast, and some thrilling action helps it overcome its extremely derivative material.
Seriously, this borrows elements from "Harry Potter", "The Giver", "Hunger Games", "Assassin's Creed", and so much more. Also, the forced romance causes it to go a bit downhill.
Yet the final act manages to be harrowing and suspenseful enough to redeem itself. It's not so divergent as it wants to be but it's not bad enough to fail the standardized literary adaptation test.
