Review of Divergent (2014) by Brad S — 04 Jan 2015
I was surprised that the first 90-minutes or so really played fast and kept my interest. I was into the training Tris went through and the whole idea of people trying to fit into a certain group they choose or that's chosen for them by circumstance.
But then the movie devolved into more typical action and franchise mode, and because they didn't give enough back story or motivation to Kate Winslett's character and the Erudite group, I just didn't feel the stakes.
It also hurts this film that there are just so many other similar stories from The Hunger Games, to The Maze Runner, to The Giver and The Signal. And that's just the similar films I've seen from 2014.
It's just a crowded field and Divergent didn't do enough in its ending to distinguish itself.
