Review of Divergent (2014) by Chaz D — 21 Aug 2015
A movie that far exceeded my expectations. This movie is a testament to the fact that teen movies do not need to only be for teens. Divergent sets up its world very well, in that its a quick and simple explanation on the world and how it is run. After you learn all about the factions, you begin to see how the military faction works, and it is very interesting how they go through Basic Training.
Our lead character, Tris is given a great character, and how she manages to cope with her new surroundings is easy to relate to from those who have had similar experiences. The visual effects are beautiful but they are not distracting from the story itself. The action scenes and the emotional scenes go hand in hand and you feel for Tris in all of her struggles.
Overall it is extremely watchable, but even for a first movie in a series it doesn't really deliver on the closure in the ending. There are plotholes that glare at you hard, and could have easily been resolved without the need to wait for a sequel.
As action/drama goes, it is no slouch, and it delivers on its promise of entertainment. You could do far worse than rent this movie.
