Review of Divergent (2014) by Reve S — 14 Nov 2015
I think the plot, although simple and predictable in some ways, is novel and thought provoking in other ways. The actors were good, and I have to say that it kept me interested throughout. I could envision it as a novel on a much more complicated and rich scale.
It reminded me of a short sci fi I once read about the exact same topic. People who could not be programmed for their best subject were considered failures (but in that novel, they secretly were groomed to become leaders (as apposed to killed for fear of their abilities).
It is a movie after the way of Hunger Games in that it is an adventure film in a sci fi setting with good actors and strong women heroins. If I were not a sci fi nut, I would have rated it a solid 4, but because I never find enough good sci fi/adventure films, and because I'm eating up the ones with women heroins, it felt like a 5 to me, and so I rated it as I enjoyed it.
