Review of District 9 (2009) by Sandra G — 07 Mar 2013
An intelligent and engrossing piece of filmmaking that consistently intrigues as it goes along. It's haggard look reflects the complexities of our flawed protagonist Wikus van der Merwe (a fine Sharlto Copley) as much as the oppression of principal alien Christopher Johnson (Jason Cope), whose depth as a character is explored through the actions of his curious young son.
Perhaps a little too gory at times (the visual effects are that good), but there's no denying that this urban tale of gang violence and discrimination in South Africa whacks an emotional punch that will resonate with its audience.
