Review of District 9 (2009) by Nathaniel B — 10 Jul 2013

One of the greatest sci-fi films I have ever seen, and one of the greatest general films as well. Brilliantly executed, with the contrast of filming styles and storytelling techniques creating a believable and understandable world, that links quite intelligently and appropriately with its thinly veiled, yet still quite heartwrenching, symbolism.

I can't forget the visuals of this film though, which include some of the most disgusting images I've ever seen on film and some of the most horrifying scenes I've ever had to witness. But somehow this is all wrapped up in the genius that is Blomkamp's District 9, which pushes a horrific and revolting world in front of you, and forces you to watch, in a strong yet wise reminder of what "humanity" is capable of.
