Review of District 9 (2009) by Matthew C — 08 Aug 2013
A surprisingly strong directorial debut from Neil Blomkamp. The film is set in an alternate version of Johannesburg, South Africa. In this version of Johannesburg, aliens, affectionately known as prawns (a euphemism for bottom-feeder), arrived somewhere around 20 years ago, if I remember right.
The South Africans have set up a camp for all the prawns known as District 9, but due to overpopulation and increasing tensions between humans and prawns, the prawns are being relocated to a new location.
The story follows a man named Wilkus who works for MNU (Multi-National United) as he travels into District 9, but eventually, things go horribly horribly wrong (I won't spoil it for you). One of the interesting things about this movie is that it starts out as a documentary, and we get a chance to hear people's opinions on the presence of the prawns.
I literally felt as if this is what would've happened if aliens ever came to our planet. While it's been a while since this movie has been released, District 9 remains as one of my favorite scifi movies of all time.
