The first 30 minutes were excellent, but once the film goes down the metamorophasis plot route, it becomes a pretty standard sci-fi chase movie with a few too many videogame inspiration. The political aspects of the film are very well done, but never fully explored.
We don't get a bigger picture, either for the humans (what is the rest of the world doing in regards to the situation) or the aliens (aside from the two main characters, we find out nothing about them, what they're like, what they do, etc).
IMO the film was too undeveloped and focused on the action to be a true allagory for the human condition (unlike the recent Moon, Solaris or Children of Men), but too vague to be a straight sci-fi. It was still a very above-average film, with a great premise and good special effects, but for me it never really achieved the levels of greatness it had potential for.
Its certainly not the sci-fi revolution many have been talking about, it was more of a dumb old-fashioned chase movie with a very interesting political/sci-fi backdrop. 8/10.
