Review of District 9 (2009) by Andrew K — 25 Mar 2013
Riddled with plot holes, tries to be a serious sci-fi drama and a commentary on racism/specism/somethird-sim. Tries to make you like the main character, who is an utter asshole. So let get me straight District 9, you think because this evil main character is having the worst day of his life we should feel for him? Hah! I'm sorry but when bad things happen to bad people I call that justice and I applaud it.
The plot is riddled with holes and thin writing. The movie goes for a documentary feel at the beginning and right at the end. A good idea but it's not utilized to it's full potential. To be fair, the movie does have some good aspects.
the central idea of it (aliens meet humans but humans are the evil ones) is good even though it's horribly implemented, and then there's the last act of the movie where the screenwriters must have decided "Fuck all this pretentious deep themes commentary on humanity bullshit let's be transformers!" But as weird as this sounds, this is easily the best part of the movie.
The weapons are cool and creative and some of the action isn't half bad. It's by no means phenomenal action but it was enough to keep me entertained. The mech and the action scene that accompanies it were kinda nice too.
BUT this is a very schizophrenic movie with an identity crisis and as such this brief glimpse of goodness comes and goes in a matter of 10 minutes (or at least it felt like 10 minutes) and then tries to be a mock documentary like it did in the first fucking 10 minutes.
All in all, District 9 is one of those movies that manages to piss me off, a feat for any movie. It had some good ideas, and definitely some potential, but it screws the pooch in just about every way it can.
Even the good stuff is fleeting and comes and goes like a one night stand. Even the good parts I have trouble remembering so it's like a one night stand while intoxicated, unlikely to remember the next day and really nothing worth remembering the next day.
Now there's a quote for the dvd cover!
