Review of District 13: Ultimatum (2009) by Amilcar A — 08 Feb 2010
If this movie had been made in the US it would have never made it to the movie theaters. It's not that it's bad (it's really not) but it's very naive and proves that action movies can only really be made in the good ol' USA.
The film is about some ghetto-ish district in Paris that is racially and religiously supercharged. The government has built a city within the city where warlords with loads of guns kill each other and everyone else in order to keep Paris full of drugs, sex and other illegal activities.
The movie is action packed and the pace is fast and a lot of fun. Sadly the movie is also very naive and innocent. The plot is full of constitutional references, illustration slogans and cooperation between groups that in real life would kill each other on sight.
I suppose that as America has produced 99% of the action cinema it has really refined the taste for violence and has drawn the lines for unnecessary dialogue.
B13U proves it has no idea on how this actually works. While some dudes play spider man and beat the shit out of soldiers, they have discussions with quotes such as:
"I was baptized but now my bible is the constituion!" WTF!!!!!!!!
Anyway, the movie is fun and while it's mostly very silly the action is very passable and the characters are quite colorful.
