Review of District 13: Ultimatum (2009) by Tony B — 13 Dec 2011
A marginally better sequel to a decent first film, primarily because it adds a little more texture in terms of commentary and story than the original - most likely due to the extra 15 minutes of running time.
Sure, there is barely any characterisation beyond one dimension across the entire piece, but David Belle & Cyril Raffaelli make for an entertaining double act (even if the latter looks like an action-man Ade Edmondson!) and we get much more of a slimy villain here with a typically slimey plan.
As I say, Besson manages to infuse a little more plot into this without complicating matters too much and there's more of a sense of the social aspect to district, but this is still pulp B-movie action at its heart and if there's nothing in here that will truly wow you, at least you can be entertained (and a mite disturbed) by your lead being introduced as a transsexual lap dancer.
And no, I'm not making that up.
