Review of Distant Voices, Still Lives (1988) by Butch H — 27 Jul 2008
Startlingly original in structure and form, Terrance Davies' poetic autobiographical film requires a fair degree of familiarity with post-war British culture, which I can't say I had while watching it.
Nonetheless, the elliptical story is frequently moving and is beautifully told through memorable vignettes, most of which revolve around communal singing. This is a musical in the truest sense of the word, one that skillfully uses its songs to reveal the hidden layers of the story.
