A story of both confronting faith and forbidden passion, Disobedience finds its 2 Rachels on top form as the childhood friends thrust back together after an extended separation. A very personal project for Mrs Weisz, who herself was raised in the Jewish faith, the story unfolds carefully and deliberately, without ever succumbing to tedium or melodrama.

It's a film that relies largely on the performances of its cast, and in this department it never faulters, with the exception of Alessandro Nivola's occasionally fluctuating accent. The script is lean and cuts right to the heart of its subject without unnecessary fluff, and while it doesn't take any direct jabs at its issues, preferring to whisper its points rather than shout them, it always feels resonant and purposeful.

The intimacy between the leads, less explicit than Blue Is The Warmest Colour but no less passionate or believable, forms its emotional core, and both actresses deliver some of the best performances of their careers.

It's a brave film with a powerful message about accepting who you are, not what others want you to be.
