Review of Disobedience (2018) by Amy T — 29 Jun 2018
Disobedience: a heartbreaking and beautiful story, this film broke my heart in many ways, it is something that anyone can identify with it , this develops in a community of Orthodox Jews in North London closed to the outside world, little known with customs and traditions attached to the Torah where the freedom to choose, sexuality are little discussed topics, shows a universal theme that expresses the unhappiness of someone who don't want to stay an share the same life of the others and need to fight with the rules of this society to find the freedom ,in ''Disobedience'' with these womans we can see all more deeply , 1 - ''Ronit'' She's separate of her comunity and religion to be happy and being free, , . The other Woman ''Esti'' is more complex has a lot of conflicts inside of her because the loves the religion and traditions but has a problem : her sexuality (being gay is a bad thing in this comunity) so she need to fight with both things.
Unlike other love stories between women (blue is the warmest color, Carol, the handmaiden ,for example) this film did not need nudity to develop a sex scene where without showing their bodies they projected love, longing, passion, desire , liberation.
In disobedience we see how the Oscar-winning director (A fantastic woman) Sebastían Lelio shows us in a very human way feelings of repression, love, and fear using planes in which words pass into the background allowing the eyes, the breaths and gestures who tell the story making this film a realistic/aunthentic representation.
The incredible cinematography ( by Danny Cohen) takes us to a patriarchal society where we are shown a warm, almost opaque color palette that represents how a community lives, governed by strict rules and traditions that make us analogy to the confinement of a person ,who can't choose how want to live. He always uses the camera to focus on the faces in a quick way to transmit all the emotions on the acting, how they feel in every moment.
We see excellent performances from these 3 actors , is a love story between women, which introduces us to the main male character in a respectful way, has personality without stereotype : the villain or idiot, he's only a human with problems and virtues, Sebastian Nivola an amazing (totally underrated actor) has surprised me a lot . The performances represented by Rachel Weisz and Rachel McAdams stunned me , with the perfect chemistry and the passioned job they show us here .
Disobedience :A forbidden (unique) love story where the internal struggle to be free to choose who we want to be, to love whoever wants to love overcomes oppression.
This movie deserves to be seen.
