Review of Disaster Movie (2008) by Alexander C — 27 Mar 2010
Sometimes you just don't feel like watching something that calls for thought; and this is the perfect move for those times.
Disaster movie is a collection of spoofs of various movies. It starts with Will dressed as a caveman in a spoof of 10,000 BC. He meets up with "Amy Winehouse" who tells him the world is going to end.
This turns out to be a dream and he wakes up in bed with his girlfriend Amy, and a few others. They have a fight because Will just can't bring himself to commit. Amy leaves in a huff with Will wondering if she'll show up to his "Sweet Sixteen" Birthday party (even though he's turning 25).
Disaster strikes and the characters find themselves trying to get out of the city. Will, along with his friend Calvin and a rotating cast of Juno, a Princess and Calvin's girlfriend Lisa go back into the city to save Amy.
They discover they have to return the crystal skull to the podium to save the world and more spoofs ensue.
While its not quality cinema, I had a good laugh at this movie. Some parts made you cringe (the high school musical spoof that went on way too long). But overall it had some funny parts. The movie involved three actors that play on MadTV and according to the special features they were allowed to improv a bit. The actors were Crista Flanagan, Nicole Parker, and Ike Barinholtz.
My favorite part would have to be the spoof of the Three Chipmunks. While two of their regular songs were normal chipmunk squeakiness, the third song brought tears to my eyes I was laughing so hard. I also enjoyed the Princess played by Nicole Parker. She almost made me want to see the original movie her role was so hilarious.
The music in this surprised me. While they were spoof songs, they actually carried a pretty good tune and it seemed to me that a lot of time went into the arrangements.
On a lesser note of hilarity, this movie definitely has the potential to offend. There is a lot of fun poked at minority groups. While some people may be ok with this, if you find these kinds of jokes offensive this is not a movie you want to see.
