Review of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (1988) by Bill G — 29 Sep 2008
If you're smart enough to appreciate intelligent comedy yet down to earth enough to get a laugh out of goofball antics, then you'll enjoy a simultaneous dose of both in DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS.
Steve Martin is perfectly paired with Michael Caine, with the latter playing the straight man to Martin in the guise of a cultured, soft-spoken, high-class European con man. The movie milks laughs from all sorts of sources: comedy of manners, sight gags, slapstick, the grotesque, and the occasional humble joke.
And perhaps best of all, this is a clean and classy film as befits its setting on the Riviera, with an old-school charm about it that brings to mind Cary Grant films or Peter Sellers comedies like "A Shot In the Dark" or "The Pink Panther.
